The allied rock-wallaby is an endemic breed to to Queensland, that is easily observed on Magnetic Island.
Local advice seems to be that late afternoon / early evening is the best time to see them, but we were there early afternoon and saw them in abundance.
The wallabies live amongst the rocks at the eastern end of Geoffrey Bay, Arcadia.
The preference of the island authorities is NOT to feed the rock wallabies. See local signs at the site for further information.
Where to find the rock wallabies
The spot is easily accessed by taking the bus to Arcadia (there’s only one bus route on Maggie – see Magnetic Island Travel) and heading south out onto the headland next to Geoffrey Bay. Just beyond the ferry slipway you’ll see a large arch of huge granite boulders (picture below) and beyond is a labyrinth of rocks and shelter for this colony to enjoy. Take your time, go and sit in one of the many caves within the system and you’re bound to see them before long.
If you’re looking for something to combine the Rock Wallabies with during a day on Magnetic Island then following the Forts Walk track for the most amazing views is highly reccomended.
