Stackpole Quay to Barafundle Bay walking route – description of the walk, GPS track and photographs along the way.
Barafundle Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches in Wales. It takes a bit of effort to get there – which is one of the reasons why my opening statement is true! Whilst we were staying in Tenby recently we took a drive out to Stackpole Quay (40 mins or so) and walked over the cliffs to Barafundle. Note that there are no facilities whatsoever on Barafundle (again, I refer you to my opening statement!) so take everything you need.
The closest car park to Barafundle Bay – Stackpole Quay
Stackpole Quay is the closest car park to Barafundle Bay, which leaves a half mile walk to the beach. The quay was built at the the end of the 18th Century to ship Limestone from a local quarry on the Stackpole Estate. There is a small cafe and public toilets at the car park, as well as a small beach in the harbour, one of Pembrokeshire’s smallest. It’s very popular with Kayakers, and plenty of people jumping off the harbour wall and rocks (not recommended!).
The walk from Stackpole Quay to Barafundle Bay
From the carpark follow the path, leaving the cafe to your left, and you will see a long flight of steps cut into the hill on the right hand side. Once you climb the steps it’s a case of follow your nose for 15 mins or so across the cliff tops until you reach the steps back down again onto the beach.
The closest car park is at Stackpole Quay, a national trust car park that costs £6 for the full day for a car (Aug 2023)
From the car park to the far end of the beach is 1.4 miles return.
There is a climb out of the car park, and also down to the beach at the other end, but these are both on well maintained steps so take your time and the reward is worth it.
Pembroke is the nearest town, approx 20 minute drive / 6 miles away.
