Traveling from Bangkok Airport to City: Taxi vs. Rail Link

Bangkok City Traffic

Bangkok Airport (Suvarnabhumi) to Bangkok City Centre

Travelling from Bangkok Airport to central Bangkok is easy, with various options. We’ve done it twice, and as I only write about things I’ve actually done here’s a summary of the two ways we tried. Other options you may wish to research include regular taxi’s and busses.

Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) Airport to Bangkok City Centre via private taxi

We travelled from the airport to central Bangkok using a private taxi the first time we travelled there. Summary:

  • Easy to book with the airport’s official partner https://www.aot-limousine.com/
  • AOT very easy to find at the airport
  • Approx 1,000 Baht one way depending on vehicle choice (approx 24 GBP / 30 USD / 28 EUR)
  • Transport straight to door
  • Pay per vehicle so the more people the better the value
  • Easy with luggage
  • Can take longer at busy periods (it took us over an hour early evening)

Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) Airport to Bangkok City Centre via Airport Rail Link

This is what we did the second time we visited Bangkok. Knowing we were doing this for one night in Bangkok before travelling north we specifically chose our accommodation close to a station (Makkasan)

  • Cheap! 45 Baht is the max fare (around £1)
  • Quick – 25 minutes or so depending on destination
  • You won’t get straight to your door
  • Rail link is on level B (Basement) of the airport
  • Every 15 mins or so 0530 – midnight
  • Tickets (which take the form of a plastic token) can be purchased using cash only and the machine does not take 1000 Baht notes. You can not pay by card.
  • 1000 Baht notes can be exchanged at the currency counters (we weren’t charged to do this)
  • My top tip..ask a friend who has been to Thailand if they have any spare currency and get your fare together before you travel. Allow 50 baht each.
